Description
Systematic position: The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Fulgoridae. As a highly invasive insect, it has become a significant concern for international agriculture, spreading rapidly through trade routes and colonizing diverse ecosystems far from its native range in Asia.
Affected crops: This insect is a generalist feeder with a wide host range. It poses a severe threat to commercial viticulture (grapes), pome fruits like apples, and stone fruits such as peaches and cherries. The tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is recognized as a preferred host and is essential for the successful completion of the pest's life cycle.
Biology and life cycle: The spotted lanternfly produces one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with masses typically laid on smooth bark, rocks, or even inanimate objects. Eggs hatch in late spring, and the nymphs undergo four developmental stages (instars) before molting into winged adults that dominate the ecosystem during late summer and autumn.
Nature of damage: Both nymphs and adults feed by inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the phloem of host plants. This constant sap depletion weakens trees and vines, leading to reduced vigor and decreased yields. The insects excrete large volumes of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, ultimately smothering the leaves and fruit.
Management and control: Integrated pest management strategies involve:
- Scraping and destroying egg masses from trunks and hard surfaces during winter.
- Deploying sticky bands around tree trunks to capture nymphs moving upward.
- Applying insecticides as a last resort in areas of high population density.
- Implementing strict quarantine protocols to prevent the accidental transport of egg masses on vehicles or goods.
