Olive lanternfly

Systematic position: The Olive lanternfly (Lycorma olivacea) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Fulgoridae. As a member of this family, it shares characteristic morphological traits with other planthoppers, distinguished by its specific coloration and host plant preferences which have gained attention in recent entomological studies.

Host plants: This species acts as a polyphagous insect. Its primary reproductive host is the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). However, when populations reach high densities, the insect readily shifts to agricultural crops, causing significant concern for viticulture and fruit orchards, as well as impacting various ornamental tree species.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle includes egg, five nymphal stages, and adult (imago). Eggs are laid in masses on tree bark and covered with a protective layer. Nymphs undergo several molts, increasing in size and changing appearance. The adults are capable of flight and rapid movement, which contributes to their dispersal and colonization of new host trees throughout the season.
