Lyctoxylon

Lyctoxylon belongs to the family Bostrichidae (auger beetles) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as significant pests of stored products and dry wood, specializing in the destruction of the cellular structure of plant-based materials. Unlike many other wood-boring beetles, Lyctoxylon prefers wood with high starch content, making them a serious threat to lumber yards and finished wooden products.

The primary objects of damage include dry hardwood materials, wooden furniture, plywood, and occasionally stored dry plant commodities. While these beetles are naturally found in tropical and subtropical regions, they are distributed globally through international trade, infesting dry warehouses and manufacturing facilities.

The biology of the species is characterized by the cryptic life cycle of the larvae. The female lays eggs in crevices or pores of the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the material, creating numerous galleries filled with frass, often referred to as boring dust. The life cycle duration depends on temperature and substrate moisture; under optimal conditions, the generation time can be accelerated, leading to rapid population growth.

Damage symptoms manifest as numerous exit holes, approximately 1-2 mm in diameter, on the surface of the wood, accompanied by the accumulation of fine wood dust. In cases of severe infestation, the internal structure of the wood is reduced to powder, causing a complete loss of structural integrity and commercial value. Without timely sanitation and remedial action, the pest can entirely destroy the infested material.

Control measures require a comprehensive management strategy:

• Maintaining low humidity in storage facilities and keeping wood moisture below 12-15%.
• Conducting regular monitoring of stockpiles for signs of exit holes and frass.
• Fumigation of infested timber shipments using authorized gaseous pesticides.
• Treating wood with insecticide formulations and wood preservatives to prevent re-infestation.
• Strict adherence to phytosanitary regulations during the transport of lumber products.
