Lyctoxylon dentatum

Lyctoxylon dentatum

Description

Systematic position: Lyctoxylon dentatum is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae (subfamily Lyctinae). These beetles are notorious pests of seasoned timber and manufactured wooden articles, operating silently within the structure of the wood until significant damage is already done.

Affected materials: The pest primarily infests the sapwood of various hardwood species, such as oak, ash, and walnut. They are a significant threat to timber yards, furniture manufacturers, and historical archives containing wooden artifacts. The preference for wood with high starch content is the primary factor attracting these beetles to specific timber stocks.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is entirely adapted to a wood-based diet. Adult females lay their eggs into the open pores of the wood surface. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the timber, creating extensive galleries while consuming the starch-rich tissues. Development time is highly dependent on ambient humidity and temperature, with accelerated growth rates observed in heated storage environments.

Damage and pest impact: The most visible sign of an infestation is the presence of fine, flour-like frass accumulating beneath the exit holes on the surface of the wood. The interior of the timber becomes riddled with tunnels, leading to severe structural degradation. Eventually, the structural integrity of the material is compromised, often leading to the complete failure or collapse of the wooden component.

Control measures:

  • Routine inspection of stored wood products and timber materials.
  • Kiln-drying of lumber to temperatures sufficient to kill all life stages of the beetle.
  • Application of professional-grade insecticidal preservatives to the wood surface.
  • Maintaining low humidity levels within storage areas to make the environment less favorable.
  • Isolation and disposal of infested items to prevent the spread of the infestation to sound timber.
