Lyctus cavicollis

The Lyctus cavicollis is a species of beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae, order Coleoptera. Known as a type of powderpost beetle, it is a significant technical pest that specializes in damaging seasoned hardwood timber and various wood-based products.

This beetle primarily infests timber that is rich in starch, which is a vital nutrient for the larvae. It targets a variety of items including furniture, floorboards, structural lumber, plywood, and wooden artifacts. Hardwood species are particularly susceptible to infestation by this wood-boring insect.

The biology of Lyctus cavicollis revolves around its life cycle within the timber. Adult females lay their eggs into the pores of the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the wood, consuming the starch and structural fibers. Depending on the environmental temperature and moisture content, the development cycle can last from one to several years.

The damage caused by these beetles is often insidious. While the internal structure of the wood is being reduced to fine, flour-like powder, the outer surface often remains intact for a long time. The presence of tiny circular exit holes and fine dust accumulation are the primary indicators of a structural infestation that requires immediate attention.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

• applying professional wood preservatives and insecticides;
• maintaining low moisture content in stored timber;
• conducting high-temperature kiln drying to kill all life stages;
• removing bark from lumber to reduce nesting sites;
