European powder-post beetle

Systematic position: The European powder-post beetle (Lyctus linearis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae (subfamily Lyctinae). These beetles are notorious for their ability to infest and degrade dried hardwood, making them a significant pest in lumberyards, furniture manufacturing, and wooden architectural structures.

Host plants: These beetles target the sapwood of various hardwoods that contain a sufficient amount of starch, which is essential for larval development. Preferred species include oak, ash, walnut, beech, and sycamore. Because they depend on starch content, they rarely infest coniferous woods, as these lack the nutritional composition required for their survival.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle typically spans one year, though it can be shortened in artificially heated environments. Females lay their eggs deep within the pores of the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the interior of the timber, consuming the starch and creating extensive galleries packed with fine, flour-like frass. Eventually, they pupate, and the adult beetle emerges by cutting an exit hole.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The infestation is often not discovered until adults begin to emerge, leaving visible exit holes. The damage is primarily internal; the larvae consume the wood from within, leaving only a thin outer shell. This leads to severe structural compromise of furniture, parquet floors, and structural timber, often resulting in complete degradation of the affected material.

Protection measures: Effective management requires both preventative and remedial actions:

• Heat treatment of lumber (kiln drying) to temperatures sufficient to kill all life stages of the beetle.
• Application of specialized wood preservatives and borate-based treatments to prevent egg-laying.
• Strict humidity control in storage facilities to keep moisture content below the levels preferred by the insects.
• Prompt removal and disposal of infested wooden items to stop the spread to non-infested material.
