Description

The Gypsy moth (Latin: Lymantria dispar) is a prominent moth species within the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. Known as a severe defoliator, it is recognized globally as one of the most destructive pests affecting forest trees, shade trees, and various fruit crops.

This pest is highly polyphagous, targeting a vast range of hosts. Its preferred targets include species like oak, birch, and willow, but it also causes significant economic damage to orchard trees such as apple, cherry, and plum, as well as various ornamental shrubs found in agricultural landscapes.

The life cycle begins with overwintering egg masses, which are typically found on bark or solid surfaces and covered with brown, hair-like scales. After hatching in the spring, the larvae, or caterpillars, begin to feed voraciously. These caterpillars are easily identifiable by their dark bodies with pairs of blue and red spots, and they have the unique ability to balloon on silk threads via wind currents.

The primary damage is caused by the caterpillars as they consume leaves, leading to complete defoliation. A single severe infestation can strip an entire tree of its canopy within days. Repeated defoliation weakens the tree's health, making it highly susceptible to secondary pests, diseases, and ultimately leading to tree mortality if left unchecked.

Management and control strategies include:

  • Manual removal and destruction of egg masses during the dormant season.
  • Use of pheromone traps to disrupt mating cycles in localized areas.
  • Application of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stage.
  • Targeted chemical treatments using systemic insecticides when infestation thresholds are exceeded.
