Lymantria albescens is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae, subfamily Lymantriinae. As a defoliating insect, it shares many biological characteristics with other lymantriids, making it a significant pest of concern for forest health and fruit production management in infested regions.

The host range of Lymantria albescens primarily includes various hardwood species and fruit trees. By consuming leaves, the larvae pose a direct threat to the vigor of these plants. Recurring infestations often lead to canopy thinning, reduced biomass production, and increased susceptibility to secondary stresses, including fungal pathogens and wood-boring insects.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in masses on tree trunks or branches, often covered with hairs from the female's abdomen to protect them from environmental factors and predators. Larvae hatch in the spring, coinciding with leaf flush, and progress through several instars before pupating in protected areas.

The primary damage caused by this pest is defoliation. In severe outbreak years, the larval feeding activity can result in the complete stripping of tree crowns. This level of damage disrupts the metabolic processes of the trees, leading to depleted energy reserves, failure to fruit, and in extreme scenarios, significant tree mortality across forest stands.
