Description
The gypsy moth (Lymantria ascetria/Lymantria dispar) is a member of the Erebidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a highly destructive defoliator known for its aggressive feeding habits, which can result in the widespread loss of canopy cover in both forests and ornamental landscapes.
This species is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of host plants. Preferred species include oaks, maples, birches, and various fruit trees such as apple and plum. During significant population outbreaks, they are capable of stripping entire forests bare, which poses a severe ecological and economic threat to silviculture.
The lifecycle begins with egg masses, which are laid in late summer and overwinter on tree trunks or hidden surfaces. Upon hatching in the spring, the larvae are highly mobile and use silken threads to balloon on the wind to new feeding sites. After several molting stages, the larvae pupate, eventually emerging as adult moths to mate and restart the cycle.
The primary damage is caused by the voracious appetite of the larvae. By consuming the leaves, they limit the tree's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis. Repeated defoliation weakens the tree's physiological defenses, making it susceptible to secondary pests, pathogens, and drought stress, ultimately leading to tree mortality.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling gypsy moth populations. This includes silvicultural management, such as thinning infested stands, and biological control using pathogens like the nucleopolyhedrosis virus (NPV). In residential and agricultural settings, the application of registered insecticides is recommended during the early larval stages for maximum efficacy.
