Description
Systematic position: The gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae (subfamily Lymantriinae). It is one of the most significant defoliating pests globally, known for its periodic outbreaks that can cause widespread ecological and economic damage.
Host plants and damage: The species is highly polyphagous, capable of feeding on over 300 different tree and shrub species. Preferred hosts include oaks, birches, and poplars, as well as many fruit trees like apples, pears, and plums. Outbreaks often lead to severe defoliation, which stresses the plants, renders them susceptible to secondary infections, and can result in tree mortality if defoliation persists over several years.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid in masses covered with tan hairs and overwinter on tree trunks or rocks. Larvae emerge in the spring and immediately begin feeding. After several instars, they pupate in sheltered areas, and adults emerge in mid-summer. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, where females are larger and flightless, while males are smaller and active fliers.
Nature of injury: Larvae are the primary agents of destruction. Young larvae skeletonize leaves, while older instars consume entire leaf blades, leaving only midribs or bare branches. A heavy infestation can leave entire forests leafless by mid-summer, forcing the trees to produce a second flush of leaves, which depletes their energy reserves and weakens them severely.
Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for control. Manual removal and destruction of egg masses during the dormant season can reduce localized populations. Biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), are highly effective against early-instar larvae. Chemical control using registered insecticides may be necessary during peak outbreaks, and pheromone traps are frequently used to monitor population trends and disrupt mating.
