Description
Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae, and subfamily Lymantriinae. As a member of the tussock moth group, it is taxonomically related to other significant forest defoliators, sharing similar behavioral traits regarding infestation patterns and host plant selection.
Host plants. The insect is primarily a forestry pest. It demonstrates a strong preference for coniferous tree species, most notably larch and pine. However, its diet can be flexible, as it is also known to feed on various deciduous trees when populations reach high densities, potentially impacting broader forest ecosystems.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Overwintering occurs at the egg stage, attached to bark or crevices. As spring temperatures rise, larvae emerge and begin feeding voraciously. After several larval instars, they pupate and transform into adults to restart the reproductive cycle.
Damage patterns and impact. The primary form of damage is the mass defoliation of host trees. The larvae strip the trees of needles or leaves, drastically reducing the tree's ability to photosynthesize. This stress weakens the tree's immune system, making it susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles or fungal pathogens, often leading to tree mortality.
Protection and control measures. Forest management involves rigorous monitoring using pheromone traps to predict population outbreaks. Integrated pest management strategies include encouraging natural predators such as birds and parasitic wasps. In severe infestation scenarios, aerial spraying with environmentally friendly bio-insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis is often utilized to mitigate damage.
