Systematic position: The insect belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae, and subfamily Lymantriinae. As a member of the tussock moth family, Lymantria lunata exhibits characteristic larval traits, including the presence of dense tufts of hairs, which serve as a defense mechanism against avian predators.

Host plants: This pest is a polyphagous insect that primarily targets deciduous trees and shrubs. It frequently affects oak, birch, and willow species, but also poses a significant threat to deciduous fruit orchards. Its ability to switch between hosts ensures its survival in diverse ecological landscapes, making it a persistent concern for arboriculture.

Biology and life cycle: The species completes a single generation per year in most temperate regions. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in clusters on tree bark and protected by the female with specialized scales. Larvae hatch in spring and pass through several instars, feeding voraciously on the canopy foliage before pupating within loose cocoons.

Damage characteristics: The primary economic damage is caused by the larval stage. Large populations of these caterpillars can result in severe defoliation, which stresses the host plants significantly. Persistent defoliation over several consecutive seasons leads to branch dieback, increased vulnerability to pathogens and wood-boring insects, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected trees.

Control measures: Management of Lymantria lunata requires integrated pest management strategies. Early detection is crucial, and monitoring adult activity with sex-pheromone traps is standard practice. Mechanical control, such as removing egg masses during winter, can reduce local populations.
