Foggy Lymantria

Systematic position: Lymantria nebulosa belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae, and subfamily Lymantriinae. As a member of the tussock moth family, it is closely related to the better-known gypsy moth, sharing similar ecological impacts on forest and agricultural ecosystems.

Host plants: This species is a polyphagous pest. It primarily affects woody plants and shrubs, including various species of oak, birch, willow, and fruit-bearing trees. During outbreaks, the larvae can cause widespread defoliation, significantly stressing the host plants and making them susceptible to secondary infections and opportunistic pests.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs deposited in masses on tree trunks or branches. In spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding voraciously on foliage for several weeks before pupating in loose cocoons hidden among leaves or within bark crevices.

Damage and severity: Larvae start by skeletonizing the leaves and progress to consuming entire leaf blades, leaving only the veins behind. The resulting damage reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to decreased growth rates. Repeated defoliation events over successive years can result in significant crown dieback and tree mortality, especially in weakened or older specimens.

Protection measures: Effective control strategies integrate biological and chemical approaches. Biocontrol involves the use of natural predators and entomopathogenic agents. Chemical control, such as applying insecticides during the early larval stage, remains effective for managing outbreaks. Furthermore, pheromone monitoring helps in tracking population spikes, while physical removal of egg masses during dormancy helps reduce future damage.
