Tawny-barred Angle

The Tawny-barred Angle (Latin: Macaria liturata) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. This moth is recognized as a significant defoliator in coniferous forests, with a particular affinity for pine stands across various temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

The primary host plants for the larvae of this species are various pine trees (Pinus species), though they are occasionally found on other conifers like spruce. Adult moths are typically identified by their grayish-brown wing patterns, which provide excellent camouflage against the bark of trees during the daytime resting period.

The life cycle of Macaria liturata usually involves one or two generations per year, depending on the local climate. The insect overwinters in the pupal stage, typically buried within the forest litter. Adult flight occurs during late spring and early summer, after which females oviposit on the host tree needles, leading to larval development throughout the warm season.

Larvae cause damage by feeding on needles. Early-stage larvae skeletonize the needles, whereas mature larvae consume the entire needle structure. In cases of severe infestation, widespread defoliation can occur, significantly impacting tree vitality, reducing annual growth increments, and making the trees susceptible to secondary wood-boring pests and fungal pathogens.
