Description
The crested leafhopper (Macrosteles cristatus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This small insect is a well-known pest in various agricultural regions, particularly affecting grain crops and grasslands by disrupting normal plant physiological processes.
It primarily infests cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as several species of forage grasses. The pest is especially prevalent in field margins and areas with lush, dense vegetation that provide shelter and consistent food sources throughout the growing season.
The biological cycle of the crested leafhopper involves eggs, nymphs, and adults. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, often deposited within the host plant tissues. As temperatures rise, nymphs emerge and progress through five developmental stages before reaching adulthood, with multiple generations possible per season.
The damage caused by the leafhopper results from direct sap-sucking, leading to foliage yellowing, stunted growth, and reduced photosynthetic efficiency. Furthermore, they are efficient vectors for various plant pathogens, particularly viruses and phytoplasmas, which can cause significant economic losses in cereal production.
To effectively manage the population of the crested leafhopper, integrated pest management (IPM) practices are required:
- maintaining clean fields by eliminating weeds that serve as alternative hosts;
- adjusting sowing dates to avoid the peak activity periods of the insect;
- monitoring fields closely using yellow sticky traps to determine population thresholds;
- applying systemic insecticides when necessary to minimize damage and prevent viral transmission.
