Large Blue butterfly

Maculinea arion

Description

Systematic position: The Large Blue (Maculinea arion) is a lepidopteran belonging to the family Lycaenidae. It is a highly specialized butterfly species, widely recognized by researchers for its unique developmental requirements that integrate both plant and insect hosts.

Host plants and habitat: The species does not affect cultivated crops. Larvae feed initially on the flower buds of wild thyme (Thymus) or marjoram (Origanum). It resides in semi-natural grasslands where specific environmental conditions are met to sustain its life cycle.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is complex and involves myrmecophily. After the initial larval stage, the caterpillar descends to the ground and mimics the chemical signals of Myrmica ant larvae. The ants carry the caterpillar into their nest, where it feeds on the ant brood for nearly a year until it emerges as an adult butterfly.

Pest status: Maculinea arion is not an agricultural pest. It does not cause any damage to crops, vegetables, or fruit trees. On the contrary, it is a flagship species for conservation, as its presence indicates a healthy, undisturbed grassland ecosystem.

Conservation measures: Because this butterfly is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, strict conservation laws apply. Management practices focus on:

  • Traditional low-intensity grazing to keep grass short.
  • Prevention of scrub encroachment to maintain sun-exposed areas.
  • Protection of Myrmica ant colonies from insecticides and disturbance.
