Oil palm bagworm

Mahasena corbetti

Description

The Oil palm bagworm (Mahasena corbetti) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Psychidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is widely recognized for its unique larval stage, during which it constructs a protective conical case (a bag) made of silk and small fragments of host plant leaves, which the larva carries throughout its entire developmental period.

This species primarily attacks oil palms (Elaeis guineensis) and coconut palms, though it can also infest various other ornamental and tropical plant species. Due to its rapid reproductive rate, Mahasena corbetti can cause widespread defoliation in large-scale plantations, leading to substantial economic losses and reduced agricultural productivity if left uncontrolled.

The life cycle of the bagworm involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A distinctive biological feature of this species is the wingless, larviform adult female, which remains inside her silken case for the duration of her life. In contrast, adult males are winged and highly mobile, flying in search of mates. Larvae go through multiple instars, enlarging their protective bags as they grow.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which scrape the surface of leaves and consume the leaf parenchyma. This feeding behavior results in skeletonized leaves, translucent patches, and eventually severe defoliation. A heavy infestation significantly impairs the tree's photosynthetic capability, leading to weakened palm vitality, poor inflorescence development, and a sharp decline in fruit bunch production.

Effective management of Mahasena corbetti relies on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include regular field monitoring, the use of pheromone traps to capture adult males, and the selective application of biological insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis. When manual removal of infested leaves is feasible on younger trees, it serves as a highly effective non-chemical control measure to prevent population outbreaks.
