Marchalina (scientific name Marchalina hellenica) is a scale insect belonging to the family Margarodidae. It is a highly specialized pest primarily known for affecting coniferous forests in Mediterranean regions, where it impacts both ecosystem health and local forestry practices.
The pest predominantly attacks various species of pine trees, such as the Aleppo pine and Turkish pine. By attaching itself to the bark of branches and trunks, the insect uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the tree's phloem sap, which can cause significant physiological stress to the host plant.
The life cycle of Marchalina consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. A distinctive feature of this insect is the secretion of large amounts of white, cotton-like waxy substance by females. This white mat covers the insect's body and its egg masses, acting as a natural barrier against external threats and environmental stressors.
Damage caused by Marchalina is characterized by needle yellowing, stunted growth, and premature defoliation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold on the tree surface. In severe infestations, the cumulative effect of sap loss and fungal growth can lead to the decline and eventual death of individual trees.
Protection strategies involve the use of systemic insecticides, which are absorbed by the plant and ingested by the insects during feeding. Cultural practices, such as pruning heavily infested branches and maintaining tree vigor, are also crucial. Additionally, biological control using natural predators, such as specific beetles or wasps, remains a key method for long-term population management.
