Marchalina hellenica

Description

Marchalina hellenica is a scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Margarodidae. This species is a significant pest in Mediterranean coniferous forests, particularly affecting various species of pine trees such as Pinus halepensis and Pinus brutia.

The host range is predominantly limited to conifers. While the insect is considered a serious pest due to its damaging effects on tree vigor, it is simultaneously valued in the beekeeping industry as a primary source of honeydew for the production of high-quality "pine honey," which creates a complex management balance between forestry and apiculture.

The biology of Marchalina hellenica involves a univoltine lifecycle, meaning it completes one generation per year. Overwintering occurs as first or second instar larvae residing in the crevices of the tree bark. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae migrate to feeding sites and secrete a distinct, cotton-like waxy substance that protects them during their development.

Damage is caused by the nymphs and females feeding on the phloem sap of the tree. Severe infestations lead to stunted growth, yellowing and dropping of needles, and general tree decline. Furthermore, the extensive honeydew excretion provides a substrate for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and negatively affects the overall physiological condition of the host.

  • Regular phytosanitary inspections of susceptible pine stands.
  • Mechanical removal of the bark where the insect population is concentrated.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak of crawler activity in early spring.
  • Implementation of biological control using natural predators like coccinellid beetles.
  • Maintaining adequate tree spacing to reduce the spread of infestations between individual hosts.
