Menzbier's marmot

Menzbier's marmot (Marmota menzbieri) belongs to the order Rodentia, family Sciuridae. This species is an alpine specialist native to the Tien Shan mountains. Although the species has conservation concerns in some areas, its proximity to mountain agriculture can result in significant economic damage to crops grown at high altitudes.

This rodent is known to cause damage to various agricultural crops, including cereals, forage grasses, and mountain vegetable gardens. By feeding on green biomass and digging extensive burrow systems, the marmot negatively impacts the yield and quality of the crops. Its presence often leads to thinning of plant stands in mountain areas.

The biology of Menzbier's marmot is defined by its adaptation to cold mountain climates. They undergo a long period of hibernation during winter, emerging in spring with intense feeding needs.
