Description
The Mongolian marmot (Marmota sibirica), belonging to the order Rodentia and the family Sciuridae, is a large colonial rodent. In agricultural landscapes, it is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in regions where intensive grazing or forage production is practiced.
The primary damage is caused to forage crops, including cereals, legumes, and various perennial grasses. The marmot's intense grazing habits can lead to the severe thinning of pastures, reducing biomass production and causing significant yield losses in hayfields and commercial forage production areas.
Regarding their biology, Mongolian marmots undergo a long hibernation period, typically lasting from late summer until early spring. The breeding cycle is annual, with females giving birth to a litter of 3 to 6 pups during the spring season. This reproductive strategy allows them to rapidly occupy and expand their burrow systems in favorable environments.
The damage profile includes both biomass consumption and structural destruction of the soil. The creation of large burrow mounds, known as mounds or "surkhins," eliminates vegetation in the immediate area. Moreover, these mounds create hazardous obstacles for agricultural machinery, frequently resulting in equipment damage during planting, harvesting, and cultivation.
Protection strategies focus on population control and site exclusion. Agronomists recommend mechanical destruction of burrow systems through deep plowing and field cultivation. In areas with high marmot densities, the use of targeted rodenticides, in strict compliance with safety regulations, along with the maintenance of buffer zones between natural habitats and cropland, remains the most effective management approach.
