Description

Marseulia is a genus of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae family) that can act as pests in various agricultural settings. Although they are not as widely known as major pests, their local impact on specific crops requires constant attention from agronomists and farmers who manage fields near their natural habitats.

These beetles primarily target plants belonging to the Asteraceae family. Their typical host plants include various species of Artemisia and related wild Asteraceae, which are often found on the edges of fields. When these wild habitats are disrupted or when the population reaches a critical density, they can migrate to cultivated crops.

The life cycle of Marseulia involves a standard holometabolous development, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult beetles typically overwinter in the upper soil layers or beneath dense plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, begin feeding, and mate to start the new generation cycle.

The damage caused by Marseulia is primarily foliar. Both adults and larvae chew on leaves, causing skeletonization or irregular holes. This feeding behavior reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, which may lead to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and lower yields if the infestation is heavy during the early development stages of the plant.

Effective management strategies should prioritize the following:

  • Implementation of crop rotation to break the life cycle;
