Description

The genus Mastrus belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. These insects are well-regarded as specialized parasitoids, acting as natural enemies to various species of Lepidoptera, which include some of the most destructive pests in agricultural fruit production.

The most prominent species, Mastrus ridibundus, is widely studied for its ability to parasitize the codling moth (Cydia pomonella). It exhibits a remarkable capability to locate overwintering larvae within their cocoons, hidden deep inside bark crevices or debris, which distinguishes it from many other natural control agents.

The biological development of Mastrus is strictly tied to its host. The female uses her ovipositor to pierce the cocoon and deposit eggs upon the host larva. The developing larvae then feed on the codling moth, effectively terminating the pest before it can mature and emerge in the spring to damage the fruit crop.

Instead, it serves as a crucial component of biological control programs, reducing the necessity for synthetic pesticides and helping to maintain ecological balance within the orchard environment.
