Four-spotted leaf beetle

Medythia quaterna, commonly known as the four-spotted leaf beetle, is a species of beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in parts of Asia, known for its ability to cause substantial defoliation and yield reduction in various legume crops.

The primary hosts of this beetle include members of the Fabaceae family. It is particularly damaging to soybean (Glycine max), various bean species (Phaseolus spp.), and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). Both the adult beetles and the larvae are active feeders, capable of attacking plants at different growth stages, which necessitates early and consistent field monitoring.

The biological cycle of this pest involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The duration of each stage is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically temperature and humidity. Adult females typically lay eggs in the soil or on the undersides of leaves, and the resulting larvae pass through several instars before pupating, often within the soil profile.

In terms of damage, the adults typically feed by creating irregular holes or perforations in the leaf tissue, a process known as skeletonization. Extensive feeding can lead to severe stress on the plant, stunted growth, and a significant decrease in the overall photosynthetic capacity of the crop. Without intervention, heavy infestations during the pod-filling stage can lead to substantial economic losses.
