The genus Megalaima, commonly known as barbets, belongs to the order Piciformes and the family Megalaimidae. While not classified as pests in the traditional entomological sense, these birds can pose challenges to orchard management in tropical climates where their foraging habits overlap with fruit production cycles.

The biology of barbets is centered on their diet, which consists largely of fruits, berries, and occasional insects. When they congregate in agricultural areas, they can cause significant damage to ripening crops such as papayas, guavas, and various citrus varieties. Their presence is seasonal and linked to the fruiting phenology of local flora.

The nature of damage involves physical piercing of the fruit epidermis with their strong, chisel-like beaks. Barbets are hole-nesters, typically carving their own nests in tree trunks. They play an essential role in forest ecosystems as seed dispersers, making it necessary to balance control measures with ecological preservation.
