While recognized for its distinct appearance, in agricultural settings across its native South American range, it is considered a pest due to its destructive feeding habits on commercial fruit crops.

Affected crops These birds primarily target commercial plantations of tropical and subtropical fruits. Their preferred diet includes guava, passion fruit, papaya, citrus varieties, and bananas. They are also known to frequent home gardens, causing significant damage to berry and orchard fruit yields during the ripening season.

Biology and lifecycle Toco toucans are arboreal birds that typically live in pairs or small flocks. They nest in tree cavities, laying a small clutch of eggs. Although they are omnivorous, they exhibit a strong preference for fruits during the harvest season, which correlates with their increased activity in agricultural areas.

Character of damage Equipped with a large, serrated beak, the Toco toucan easily tears through the outer layer of fruits. This mechanical damage renders the produce unmarketable.
