Melalgus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles. These insects are significant pests that specialize in boring into woody tissues of plants. Their characteristic morphology, including a hooded pronotum, allows them to penetrate tough bark and wood effectively, making them a concern for both forestry and orchard management.

These pests primarily target a variety of woody plants, including fruit trees and ornamental species. The damage is largely caused by the larvae, which tunnel deep into the sapwood and heartwood. This activity disrupts the vascular system of the host plant, preventing the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting and death of affected branches.

The life cycle of Melalgus involves eggs laid on the bark or within crevices of the tree. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the wood, where they spend the majority of their developmental stage. The duration of their lifecycle can span from several months to years, heavily influenced by environmental factors such as moisture content in the wood and ambient temperature levels.

Signs of infestation are often identified by the presence of small, perfectly round exit holes on the surface of the bark and fine wood dust, known as frass, gathering at the base of the tree or in branch forks. High levels of infestation can compromise the structural integrity of the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary environmental stresses and pathogenic infections.
