The green-headed hoverfly (lat. Melangyna viridiceps) belongs to the family Syrphidae within the order Diptera. While many hoverflies are known for their beneficial roles as pollinators or predators of aphids, specific species like this one require careful observation as their larvae can cause damage to plant tissues under certain ecological conditions.
This species poses a threat to a variety of crops, including cereals, vegetables, and ornamental plants. The pest typically targets plants in vulnerable growth stages, leading to economic losses if the larval population density reaches significant levels, particularly in humid agricultural environments.
