Dark pollen beetle

Meligethes atratus

Description

The dark pollen beetle (Meligethes atratus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae. This small insect is a specialized phytophage primarily associated with cruciferous (Brassicaceae) plants. The adult beetle is characterized by a small, oval body, typically measuring about 2 to 3 millimeters, with a dark, metallic-black coloration.

The beetle primarily damages crops such as rapeseed, mustard, and turnip rape. Adults feed on the pollen, flower buds, and blossoms, boring into them to access nutrients. This feeding behavior is most destructive during the budding stage, leading to bud abortion and significant reductions in seed yield potential.

The biological cycle of this species consists of a single generation per year. Adults overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in early spring as temperatures rise. Once active, they migrate to host plants to feed and mate. Eggs are deposited inside the buds, where the larvae feed on floral tissues before dropping to the ground to pupate in the soil.

Damage caused by Meligethes atratus is often observed as withered buds and empty flower stalks. This pest reduces the overall number of viable pods, leading to yield loss. In periods of delayed flowering due to cool weather, the infestation window increases, which can exacerbate the impact on crop productivity if not managed correctly.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling this beetle. Key measures include:

  • Monitoring beetle populations with yellow sticky traps.
  • Maintaining optimal crop rotation.
  • Controlling wild cruciferous weeds that serve as alternate hosts.
  • Applying targeted insecticides only when economic thresholds are reached.
Careful timing of chemical applications is crucial to minimize the negative impact on beneficial insects and pollinators.
