The adults are nocturnal, possessing mottled, cryptic coloration that allows them to blend into the bark of trees during daylight hours.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the genus Prosopis, commonly known as mesquite trees. However, as generalist feeders in some contexts, the larvae can impact other leguminous plants when populations surge. The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage, which feeds voraciously on the foliage of host trees.

The life cycle of Melipotis indomita follows a standard holometabolous pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on the host foliage, and larvae pass through several instars while consuming large quantities of plant tissue.
