Description
The genus Meliscaeva is part of the Syrphidae family, commonly known as hoverflies. While they are frequently recognized for their role as pollinators and biological control agents in gardens, certain species within this group have life cycles that interact closely with host plants in ways that can be considered detrimental to commercial crop production.
The biological development of these insects consists of a complete metamorphosis process: egg, three larval stages, puparium, and adult.
