Description

Systematic position: The Arabic root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne arabicida) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Heteroderidae. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode that acts as an obligate endoparasite, causing significant economic losses in susceptible agricultural sectors.

Host range: While named for its primary association with Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), Meloidogyne arabicida is known to parasitize a variety of other host plants. Its ability to survive in diverse soil types and thrive in tropical environments makes it a persistent threat to perennial plantations and various rotation crops found in endemic regions.

Biology and life cycle: The nematode's life cycle involves juvenile stages and sedentary adults. Second-stage juveniles are the primary infective forms that migrate through the soil to find plant roots. Once they enter the root tissue, they induce the formation of giant cells, which serve as their primary food source, eventually developing into mature females that lay eggs in gelatinous matrices.

Damage and pathogenicity: The presence of Meloidogyne arabicida is indicated by characteristic gall formation (root knots) on the root system. These swellings disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering the uptake of nutrients and moisture. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, wilting, leaf chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield capacity, potentially leading to total plant death in heavy infestations.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode. Strategies include:

  • Utilizing nematode-resistant rootstocks and cultivars.
  • Implementing strict phytosanitary measures to ensure clean planting stock.
  • Utilizing cover crops that possess nematicidal properties.
  • Applying biological control agents like Pochonia chlamydosporia or other beneficial fungi.

Effective management requires long-term planning, as once the population is established in the soil, eradication is extremely difficult and costly.
