Cereal root-knot nematode
Meloidogyne artiellia
Description
Meloidogyne artiellia is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Meloidogynidae (order Tylenchida). It is recognized as a serious pest, particularly in the Mediterranean region and other temperate areas where legumes and small grains are cultivated. This species is highly specialized, causing severe damage to the root systems of its host plants.
The primary hosts for this nematode include important crops such as chickpeas, lentils, peas, wheat, barley, and oats. Because of its wide host range, Meloidogyne artiellia can persist in soil for several years by rotating between different susceptible host species, making it a persistent challenge for modern agricultural production systems.
The life cycle begins with the second-stage larvae (J2) emerging from eggs in the soil. These larvae penetrate the roots of host plants, where they induce the formation of specialized feeding sites within the plant tissue. This process leads to the characteristic swelling of the roots known as galls. Once the larvae establish themselves, they develop into sedentary adults, with females producing eggs that continue the infestation cycle.
The damage caused by this nematode is primarily reflected in the stunted growth of the plant, chlorosis, and reduced yield quality. By damaging the vascular tissues, the nematode disrupts the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant. In cases of heavy infestation, the root system becomes heavily galled, leading to severe crop failure even under optimal environmental conditions.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest control. This includes the implementation of crop rotation strategies using non-host or resistant crops to starve the nematode population. Furthermore, keeping fields free of weeds that serve as alternate hosts is essential. In specific scenarios, soil solarization or the application of approved nematicides can be utilized, though cultural practices remain the foundation of long-term population control.
