Meloidogyne baetica is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. As a sedentary endoparasite, this organism infects the root systems of various host plants, inducing the formation of root-knots or galls that disrupt the plant's physiological processes.

The host range of this nematode includes several perennial and woody species, with particular significance noted in agricultural contexts involving Mediterranean crops. The nematode is specifically adapted to these environments, where it establishes its population within the root cortical tissues, utilizing the plant's nutrients for development.

The life cycle involves the migration of second-stage juveniles through the soil until they penetrate the root tips of a suitable host. Once inside, they induce the development of giant cells, which serve as a specialized nutrient source. The female becomes stationary, enlarges significantly, and produces a mass of eggs, often enclosed in a gelatinous matrix.

Damage to the plant is caused by the physical disruption of the root vascular system. The galls prevent the uptake and transport of water and nutrients to the upper parts of the plant.
