Brazilian root-knot nematode
Meloidogyne brasiliensis
Description
The Brazilian root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne brasiliensis) is a microscopic obligate parasite belonging to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Meloidogynidae. It is a highly specialized soil-borne pathogen that targets the vascular system of plant roots, leading to severe agricultural losses worldwide.
This nematode species has a broad host range, primarily infecting vegetable crops like tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers, as well as significant field crops such as soybeans. The presence of these nematodes often goes undetected until significant root galling has already occurred, making them a hidden but formidable threat to crop productivity.
The life cycle begins with the second-stage juveniles (J2) migrating through the soil to locate a suitable host root. Once they penetrate the root tissue, they induce the formation of giant cells, which serve as their permanent feeding sites. This metabolic activity leads to the characteristic swelling of roots known as galls, where the female nematode matures and produces large egg masses.
The damage caused by Meloidogyne brasiliensis is primarily mechanical and physiological. The developed galls disrupt the xylem and phloem, severely limiting water and nutrient uptake. Consequently, infested plants exhibit stunted growth, wilting during hot weather, yellowing of foliage (chlorosis), and a significant reduction in overall fruit or yield quantity.
Management strategies for this pest focus on preventing initial infestation and reducing soil population levels. Key practices include the rotation of host crops with non-host or antagonistic plants, the application of chemical or biological nematicides, and the sterilization of greenhouse soil. Strict adherence to phytosanitary measures, such as sanitizing farming equipment and using certified disease-free seedlings, is essential to halt the spread of the pathogen.
