Meloidogyne brevicauda is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is recognized as a significant pathogen primarily affecting tea plants, often leading to severe decline in plantation health and productivity in specific tropical regions.

The primary host for this species is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Although its host range is relatively specialized, the damage it inflicts within its target environment is profound, as it colonizes the root systems of long-term perennial crops, making eradication difficult once an area is heavily infested.

The life cycle involves the migration of second-stage larvae (J2) into the root tissues. Once established, the nematode induces the formation of large, distinct galls. These galls disrupt the vascular tissues of the root, creating a sink for nutrients that the nematode exploits throughout its maturation into the adult stage.

Symptoms of infestation are primarily observed as chronic decline, characterized by leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and a lack of vigor in the aerial parts of the plant. The damage to the root cortex prevents efficient nutrient uptake, which renders the plant increasingly susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress.

Management strategies require an integrated approach to mitigate the impact of Meloidogyne brevicauda. Essential practices include strict nursery hygiene, the selection of resistant cultivars where available, and the application of chemical or biological nematicides during the initial planting stages. Monitoring soil health and avoiding the movement of infested soil between fields is crucial for preventing the spread of this parasite.
