Description

Meloidogyne camelliae is a species of endoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This pathogen is a significant threat to ornamental plants, specifically targeting the vascular tissues of root systems.

The primary hosts of this nematode are species of the genus Camellia. It thrives in nursery environments and landscape settings, where it spreads through infested soil, contaminated tools, or infected nursery stock, often remaining undetected until severe symptoms appear.

The life cycle involves the migration of second-stage juveniles (J2) through the soil to find root tips. Once they penetrate the roots, they induce the formation of giant cells, which serve as a nutrient source. The nematodes then mature into sessile, pear-shaped females, laying egg masses within the roots.

Damage is characterized by the presence of root galls, which impair the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients efficiently. Above-ground symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, reduced flower quality, and general decline, making the plants highly susceptible to secondary infections.

Control strategies require integrated management. Key steps include:

  • Strict quarantine of new plant material.
  • Steam or chemical soil sterilization.
  • Use of antagonistic plants and soil amendments.
  • Application of specialized nematicides under expert supervision.
