Description
The Columbia root-knot nematode, scientifically known as Meloidogyne chitwoodi, is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This microscopic pest is widely recognized as a serious quarantine pathogen capable of causing extensive economic damage to various agricultural commodities globally.
The host range of Meloidogyne chitwoodi is remarkably broad. It primarily infests tubers of potatoes, but also severely impacts carrots, tomatoes, and various cereal crops, including wheat and corn. Its ability to persist in the soil and survive in weed roots makes it particularly difficult to eradicate once a field becomes infested.
The life cycle of the nematode is closely tied to the host plant. Second-stage juveniles move through the soil to locate roots, which they penetrate to establish feeding sites. Inside the root or tuber, the nematode induces the development of giant cells, leading to the formation of characteristic galls. The population dynamics are highly dependent on soil temperature, with peak activity occurring during the growing season.
Symptoms of infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting of the above-ground parts of the plant. However, the most diagnostic damage occurs on the potato tubers, where small, raised, or irregular galls form beneath the skin. These lesions significantly reduce the market value of the crop and can facilitate secondary decay by opportunistic fungi and bacteria during storage.
