Description

Meloidogyne coffeicola is a highly destructive soil-borne plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is recognized as a major limiting factor in coffee production, causing severe physiological decline in susceptible Coffea arabica cultivars.

The primary host for this nematode is the coffee plant, where it selectively infects the root system. Unlike generalist nematodes, this species has adapted specifically to the coffee plant's vascular anatomy, causing significant disruptions in water and nutrient uptake through the creation of root galls and metabolic sinks.

The biological cycle starts with second-stage juveniles (J2) emerging from eggs in the soil, which move to find suitable root infection sites. Once inside the root, the parasite induces the formation of specialized giant cells. These cells serve as a permanent food source for the sedentary females, which continue to swell and produce egg masses within the root structure.

Typical symptoms of infestation include the appearance of numerous small galls on the roots, which reduce the root mass and impair the plant's ability to withstand environmental stress. Externally, the affected coffee plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, severe nutrient deficiencies, and often die prematurely during periods of drought.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include:

  • Utilizing nematode-resistant rootstocks for grafting.
  • Implementing rigorous nursery sanitation protocols to prevent pathogen introduction.
  • Applying specific nematicides during early growth stages.
  • Improving soil health through organic amendments that support antagonistic microbial populations.

Sustainable control remains a global priority due to the severe economic impact of Meloidogyne coffeicola on the coffee industry. Ongoing research focuses on breeding resistant varieties and identifying biological control agents capable of suppressing juvenile nematode populations in the rhizosphere.
