Description
Meloidogyne daklakensis is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Meloidogynidae and the order Tylenchida. Identified primarily in the Dak Lak region of Vietnam, it has gained recognition as a significant threat to tropical agricultural systems. This microscopic roundworm is an obligate parasite, meaning it requires a living host to complete its complex biological life cycle.
The primary host for Meloidogyne daklakensis is the coffee plant (Coffea canephora). The nematode infects the root system, causing severe physiological stress to the tree. Because coffee is a long-term perennial crop, even moderate nematode pressure can result in cumulative economic losses over several years, affecting both the health of the root system and the overall berry yield.
The biology of this nematode is characterized by the formation of galls, or root knots, caused by the nematode's secretion of substances that disrupt normal cell division in the plant roots. The females swell into a pear shape within the plant tissue, where they remain stationary and lay hundreds of eggs. Juveniles of the second stage migrate through the soil to find new susceptible root tips, continuing the cycle of infestation.
Visible damage symptoms include stunted growth of the plant, yellowing leaves, and wilting during periods of heat stress, as the compromised root system can no longer supply sufficient water. Below the soil surface, the roots appear knotted and malformed. These lesions are not just direct damage; they often become entry points for secondary soil-borne pathogens, such as fungi, which accelerate the decay of the root system.
Management of Meloidogyne daklakensis relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies:
- Ensuring nursery seedlings are free from nematode contamination.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants to break the nematode's life cycle.
- Applying organic soil amendments like compost to enhance beneficial soil microbes.
