Description
The ten-lined root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne decalineata) is a microscopic phytoparasitic organism belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This nematode is a significant soil-borne pest that specifically targets the root systems of various agricultural crops, causing severe physiological stress and economic losses in the horticultural sector.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants, particularly vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and various tuber crops. The nematode's specialized feeding behavior redirects the plant's resources to support the formation of galls, which disrupts the vascular tissues of the root system and prevents proper nutrient uptake.
The life cycle begins with the hatching of second-stage juvenile larvae in the soil, which are highly mobile and seek out roots for penetration. Upon finding a suitable site, the larvae settle and induce physiological changes in the root cells, eventually developing into sedentary, swollen females that produce large clusters of eggs protected by a gelatinous matrix.
Damage to the plant is characterized by the development of knotted galls on the roots, which prevent the efficient transport of water and mineral nutrients. Above-ground symptoms often include stunted growth, chlorosis, wilting during hot periods, and a general reduction in fruit yield, making the plants more vulnerable to secondary infections from fungi and bacteria.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Growers should prioritize the use of resistant varieties where available and practice long-term crop rotation with non-host crops to starve the soil population. Soil solarization or the application of specialized nematicides may be necessary in heavily infested fields to reduce the nematode pressure below the economic injury level.
