Duyts root-knot nematode

The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne duytsi is classified within the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and the family Meloidogynidae. This microscopic pest is an obligate endoparasite that primarily infects the root tissues of various host plants, causing severe physiological disturbances in the plant's vascular system.

This nematode targets a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural crops, particularly those grown in greenhouses and protected environments. Solanaceous and cucurbitaceous crops are frequently recorded as hosts. The presence of Meloidogyne duytsi can lead to severe outbreaks in monoculture production systems where environmental conditions favor the rapid population growth of the nematode.

The biological cycle of the pest consists of the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. Adult females are sedentary and reside within root tissues, where they deposit eggs in gelatinous matrices. The second-stage juveniles (J2) are the infectious forms that emerge from the roots to infest the surrounding soil and seek new root systems to colonize.

Damage is characterized by the formation of galls, or knots, on the root system due to hypertrophic cell growth induced by the nematode's feeding. These galls interfere with the root's ability to uptake water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, wilting, and significantly reduced yield. In extreme cases, the plant may suffer from secondary infections due to the weakened state of the roots.

Management strategies focus on preventing infestation and reducing existing soil populations:

• Implementing strict crop rotation plans with non-host species.
• Using certified, nematode-free transplants and nursery stock.
• Applying soil sterilization techniques, such as solarization or steam treatment in greenhouses.
• Utilizing biological control agents, such as nematode-trapping fungi or beneficial bacteria.
• Maintaining soil hygiene by removing infected plant debris immediately after harvest.
