Ethiopian root-knot nematode

The Ethiopian root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne ethiopica) is a destructive plant-parasitic roundworm belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily attacks the root systems of various economically important crops, leading to the formation of characteristic root galls.

This nematode is a polyphagous pest, meaning it has a wide host range. It infests essential crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, and even perennial crops like grapevines. Its ability to thrive in diverse climatic conditions, particularly in greenhouse environments, makes it a persistent threat to global agricultural productivity.

The life cycle of Meloidogyne ethiopica is complex and depends heavily on the presence of a susceptible host. Infective second-stage juveniles emerge from eggs in the soil, migrate towards the root zone, and penetrate the root tissue. Once inside, they induce the plant to form giant cells, which serve as a continuous nutrient source. The female matures into a sedentary, pear-shaped adult, laying eggs in a protective gelatinous matrix.

Visible damage is mainly underground, where the development of knots or galls disrupts vascular tissues. Above-ground symptoms include stunting, chlorosis, wilting during periods of heat stress, and overall lack of vigor. Due to the compromised root system, plants are unable to effectively uptake water and minerals, resulting in significant yield losses and poor fruit quality.
