Description

The Florida root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne floridensis) is a microscopic obligate plant parasite belonging to the family Meloidogynidae. Unlike some other species of root-knot nematodes, this organism is specifically known for its impact on fruit trees, particularly peach cultivars, and represents a significant challenge for nurseries and orchards.

The host range of Meloidogyne floridensis includes various woody perennials and certain herbaceous species. It is highly adapted to tropical and subtropical soil conditions. The parasite establishes feeding sites within the plant roots, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients from the soil to the leaves, leading to severe physiological stress for the infected plant.

The life cycle begins when second-stage juveniles (J2) emerge from eggs in the soil and penetrate the root elongation zone. Inside the root, they induce the formation of specialized feeding sites known as giant cells. The nematodes become sedentary, swell into a pear shape, and begin to produce eggs within a protective gelatinous matrix, completing the cycle typically within a few weeks, depending on temperature.

Damage caused by this nematode is characterized by the formation of galls (knots) on the root system. Above-ground symptoms are non-specific but typical of root dysfunction: stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms, wilting during hot weather, and overall yield reduction. In heavy infestations, the roots may become severely deformed and brittle, significantly reducing the lifespan and productivity of the crop.

Integrated management is essential for effective control of Meloidogyne floridensis. This includes strict adherence to nursery certification programs to prevent the spread of infested stock. Growers should prioritize the use of resistant rootstocks, as chemical control options are often limited and costly. Soil solarization and the incorporation of nematode-suppressive green manure crops can also help reduce the nematode population density in the soil before planting.
