Description

Systematic position: Meloidogyne graminicola belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a highly specialized sedentary endoparasite that colonizes the root tissues of host plants, causing significant morphological changes.

Host crops: This nematode is a major concern for rice cultivation, particularly in flooded ecosystems. It also infests various other graminaceous crops, including wheat, barley, maize, and grasses, which often act as alternative hosts that maintain the population density in the field.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The infective second-stage juveniles (J2) penetrate the roots near the elongation zone. They induce the formation of giant cells, which serve as their nutrient source, leading to the development of characteristic root galls where the female matures and lays eggs.

Nature of damage and pathogenicity: The primary symptom is the presence of numerous small galls on the roots. Infected plants exhibit stunting, chlorosis, and wilting due to the impaired root system's inability to take up water and nutrients. High infestation levels can lead to drastic yield reductions and stand thinning.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. Key strategies include:

  • Crop rotation with non-host crops like legumes.
  • Effective weed management to eliminate alternative hosts.
  • Soil solarization and proper water management during the crop cycle.
