Description

Meloidogyne graminis is a plant-parasitic nematode within the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is widely recognized as a significant pathogen that specializes in infecting the root systems of various grass species, causing substantial damage to turf and forage crops.

This nematode is primarily found attacking grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and bentgrass. It is a common problem in golf courses, professional athletic fields, and commercial sod farms, where the monoculture environment facilitates the rapid buildup of the nematode population in the soil.

The life cycle begins when second-stage juveniles invade the roots, establishing feeding sites. The parasite secretes proteins that induce the formation of giant cells and characteristic root knots (galls). These structures sequester nutrients from the plant, ensuring the nematode's development into adult sedentary females.

Damage caused by Meloidogyne graminis is typically reflected in stunted above-ground growth and yellowing (chlorosis) of the foliage. Because the root system is damaged, plants become less efficient at taking up water, making the turf susceptible to drought stress even under moderate irrigation.

Effective management strategies include the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) practices. This involves soil testing for nematode thresholds, improving soil health to increase plant vigor, and utilizing nematicides where appropriate. Biocontrol agents, such as beneficial fungi, are increasingly used to suppress population levels in sensitive turf environments.
