Description
Meloidogyne haplanaria is a significant species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. These microscopic worms are highly specialized root pathogens capable of causing severe economic losses in sensitive crops, particularly in warm temperate and tropical agricultural regions.
The primary host for this nematode is peanut (Arachis hypogaea), though it can parasitize other plant species, maintaining its population density within the soil. Because of its mode of life, it is often difficult to detect until significant damage to the crop's physiological state has already occurred, leading to reduced yields and inferior nut quality.
The life cycle begins with the second-stage juvenile (J2), which is the mobile infective stage. Once the J2 penetrates the host root system, it settles in a feeding site and induces the formation of specialized giant cells. The nematode then undergoes several molts, with females becoming sedentary and swollen within the root tissue as they produce eggs.
Damage is characterized by the development of characteristic galls or knots on the root system, which serve as sites for nematode feeding and reproduction. These galls disrupt the xylem and phloem tissues, effectively limiting the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients from the soil. Symptoms include stunted vegetative growth, chlorosis, and wilting during periods of moisture stress.
