Description
The Spanish root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne hispanica) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is a significant soil-borne pest that primarily thrives in warm climates and greenhouse conditions, affecting various agricultural and horticultural crops.
This species has a broad host range, causing severe damage to economically important crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and melons. Because it is highly adaptive, it can survive in various soil types, making it a persistent challenge for farmers and home gardeners alike.
The life cycle involves eggs, four larval stages, and sedentary adult females. Second-stage juveniles move through the soil to locate a host root, penetrate the root tip, and establish a feeding site. The nematode secretes proteins that induce the formation of galls (knots), which serve as a specialized nutritional source for the developing parasite.
Symptoms of infestation include stunted plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during periods of heat. Below the ground, the root system displays characteristic knots or swellings. These galls interfere with water and nutrient uptake, leading to reduced yield quality and quantity, and in severe cases, plant death.
