Description

Systematic position. Meloidogyne ichinohei is a sedentary endoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. This organism is highly adapted to a parasitic lifestyle, relying exclusively on host plant roots for nutrient intake and reproductive success throughout its development.

Host crops. This species is known to infest a variety of agricultural and horticultural plants. It poses a significant threat to root crops, vegetables, and ornamentals, often causing substantial economic losses in infested fields due to the impairment of root function and the resulting lack of nutrient uptake by the host.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves several stages: eggs, four larval stages, and adults. Infective second-stage juveniles emerge from eggs in the soil and penetrate host roots. Once inside, they establish a feeding site, become sedentary, and induce the formation of galls (knots). The mature females remain embedded in the root tissue, where they continue to produce eggs.

Damage and pathogenicity. The primary symptoms include the formation of characteristic galls on roots, which disrupt the plant's vascular system.

  • Foliar yellowing and premature senescence.
  • Wilting during periods of moisture stress.
  • Reduced root weight and overall crop yield.

Protection measures. Management requires a strictly integrated approach. Key strategies include practicing crop rotation with non-host crops, utilizing nematode-free planting material, and implementing soil sanitation practices. In high-value crop production, chemical nematicides or biological control agents (such as predatory fungi or beneficial bacteria) are used to suppress population levels below economic thresholds.
