Description
The Javanese root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica) is a microscopic obligate plant parasite within the order Tylenchida and the family Meloidogynidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests, particularly in tropical and subtropical climates.
This nematode possesses a very broad host range, attacking thousands of plant species including vital food crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, cucurbits, and peppers. Its ability to thrive in diverse soil conditions makes it a persistent threat in both greenhouse environments and open-field agriculture.
The life cycle begins with the second-stage juvenile (J2) which migrates through the soil to locate a susceptible root tip. Once it penetrates the root, the nematode establishes a feeding site by inducing the formation of giant cells. This physiological manipulation results in the characteristic root galls that visually identify the infestation.
Plant damage manifests as stunted growth, wilting during hot periods, and nutrient deficiency symptoms. The root system becomes heavily knotted and distorted, severely impairing the plant's vascular system. In severe cases, the entire crop may fail as the roots lose their capacity to support the plant.
Managing Meloidogyne javanica requires an integrated pest management strategy. This includes crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic crops, soil solarization in greenhouses, and the application of chemical or biological nematicides. Breeding and planting resistant varieties remain the most sustainable solutions for long-term control.
